Land Settlement Association HoldingsThese holdings differ from the local authority holdings in several important ways. They are almost entirely horticultural, so that they tend to be quite small in terms of acreage. They are quite highly capitalised, with a substantial area of glass. The tenant has to contract to use the co-operative services provided by the Association, which include packing, marketing, propagation, materials and machinery supply, and neglecting to do so is a breach of tenancy. The emphasis is on production of lettuce, tomatoes and celery. Average incomes on the estates tend to be high, certainly in comparison with what is earned by other small farmers. A new tenant does not need to have previous experience of intensive cultivation on the lines practised by the LSA estates; but they must have the same general qualifications and the same amount of experience as are required of a tenant of a small-holding provided by a small-holding authority. The same loan facilities and capital requirements exist also. Requests for further information and applications for holdings to: The General Manager, Land Settlement Association, 43, Cromwell Road, London SW7 2EE.
