My favorite is L'Engle's big children's book, the Other Side of the Sun.
The heroine is an English bride who stays with her new in-laws, a Southern
elite family, while waiting for her new husband to return. Meanwhile, she
discovered the family secrets. The most shocking was that that her in-law
that lived there with them was behind the feared Night Riders.

We have me the enemy and he is us.
