Jill,
re: the image of the world economy going over a cliff (and I wonder if this
exchange didn't happen when the Asian economies were approaching meltdown a
few years ago): John Cobb addressed our annual UU minister's day at our
general assembly a few years ago. To imagine an economist holding the
attention of a few hundred primarily right-brained ministers for a few hours
is stunning. At any rate, he stated that the only thing that he saw that
would change the world economic situation towards more justice for all
counties was to have the World Bank and IMF system crash.
He said that it would be tremendously painful for all for many years, but
that he saw that as the only hope for change. I believe that he spoke at the
beginning of the Asian problems when there was a lot of speculation about how
this might bring down all economies. I wonder if he would feel any
differently now.
My question is, how are we preparing to fill the gap in leadership if this
happens? This is where I see building communities and linkages is so
important, and one of the greatest areas of brainwashing is in our cult of
the individual. This is an area where I am susceptible, as one who has spent
many years living in different places rather than putting down roots. I know
how to fend for myself, but this skill may ultimately be my demise.
Blessings, Priscilla
