IF one does sufficient work on oneself to "clear away the brushwood"
scattered throughout one's mind by the culture within which one is raised (a
process which in early childhood occludes one's memory of origins), one may

their purpose.

Probably most individuals do not remember fully.  The secret purpose is so
compelling, nonetheless, that many are drawn anyway into a life of doing
things that contribute in one way or another to fulfillment of their
purpose, groping their way but feeling a particular kind of certitude at the
same time that they are "called" and cannot do otherwise.  The old concept
of destiny, now unfashionable and practically never discussed in our go-go
times, is connected with this.  In cases where circumstance is least
favorable, the individual may slide into disappointment or even
self-destruction.

The Australian Aborigine walkabout, the Native American vision quest, and
initiatory practices among the Dagara of Burkina Faso, Africa (described by
Malidoma Patrice Some in "Of Water and the Spirit" which is an enthralling
read), are three examples of practices institutionalized by extremely
sophisticated "uncivilized" cultures to validate memory and prevent the
forgetting and neglect of origins that the West heedlessly encourages.
