I think this article (about GE potatoes that glow when they need to be
water) points up one of my central objections to the claim that GEstuff
will save the poor and hungry. They assume that no one knows how to farm.
People KNOW how to farm, they know a LOT more than these researchers do
about how to grow food. American farmers who have signed onto the
agribusiness model have given up their lifelong knowledge, but not everyone
around the world has. We do not NEED intelligent plants, since we have
intelligent people...well, intelligent until they are promised millions for
giving up their diversified crops for one big make you a millionaire kind
of crop...
