Fool's gold exists only because there is real gold. Purveyors of the former take pains to promote and sell their product to unsophisticated buyers. Possessors of the latter are inclined to value secrecy, for they know the true value of what they have and prefer to deal only with others who recognize that value, too. Proclaiming their possession from the rooftops will attract attention of a kind that will interfere with and perhaps entirely prevent the continued enjoyment of their wealth and preferred manner of being.
