It is fruitless to use Hawaiian words casually, in place of or as a
supplement to perfectly good English words, without a grasp of the way the
Hawaiian language works and insight into the varied meanings of Hawaiian
words.  There is no Hawaiian word "kuleano".

"Kuleana" means right, privilege, concern, responsibility, title, business,
property, estate, portion, jurisdiction, authority, liability, interest,
claim, ownership, tenure, affair, province; reason, cause, function,
justification; small piece of property, as within an ahupua'a (land division
stretching from the mountains to the coastline and out into the sea); blood
relative through whom a relationship to less close relatives is traced, as
to in-laws.

"Balance" in the organizational context that concerns Dee Hock is probably
expressed best by the Hawaiian word "kaulike":  equality, equation, equity,
justice; equal, impartial, just, mutual, parallel; to balance evenly, make
alike, be in a similar situation, treat fairly and impartially, dispense
justice.  In the active verb form, which denotes direct, active effort to
create the condition or state that the previous terms refer to, the word
becomes "ho'okaulike", to equalize, balance.
