They're the ones who most certainly *do not* believe in a "cold, mechanical world," because they live in a world of the ego, which is anything but cold and anything but mechanical. Of all the scientists I've known and worked with, many of them atheists and firm believers in a mechanical world. None of them find it cold, however, unless you're talking about the 3K cosmic microwave background. Cold is a human term, a pejorative term, only the one that means something only in the context of us. (And, more properly, the one who uses the word.) Most scientists I've known see the universe as deeply mysterious and beautiful, anything "but" cold. Maybe it's only you, Nan, who sees a mechanical world as cold. While the upper echelons of science has its share of egos, like any field (even Christianity), most scientists I've known hardly believe that winning is all that matters or that might makes right. In fact, some of them are some of the wisest people I've ever met. Have you even ever known a scientist, Nan? If nonscientists knew as much about science as scientists know about humanity, history, literature, and philosophy, I believe our world would be a lot better off. David
