Holly, you have made some good points about the dangers of labeling. Here
in Hawaii being individually humble (no grand-standing and hogging the
limelight) and a willing and capable team player are valued highly. Over
the years I have become totally convinced that the best decisions are those
that arise from the combined perspectives of many individuals. And I think
that effective team playing requires greater personal development that
individualism does. It is a good crucible for learning.
I also think that John was writing from the viewpoint of broad cultural
criticism. A certain kind of "team player" is one who "goes along" and may
end up being a sheep led to slaughter. I was surprised by the heat of the
objections to his language.
