It doesn't make any sense. But it's human nature. People who still have ground to cover on the quest of knowing themselves may take the objective language of another person (in this case, your definition of "Babbitt") and apply their own subjective feelings, preferences, biases, fears -- whatever -- as a kind of "screen" that leads them to erroneous perceptions and interpretations, often indicating that they think they are being criticized or attacked. In technical, psychological terminology the phenomenon is named "projection". It happens all the time. Nothing can be done about it. One must grin and bear it (which is an effective discipline in acceptance and patience). I also think it is appropriate to point out the behavior, as you have done. Kaleopono
