[pf] Our common beliefs by Fitzsimmons, Diane 01 December 2000 16:23 UTC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been participating in our city's greenbelt task force, which is trying to set up a system of open spaces and trails in our city. As we move along in the process, we have had a series of ward meetings during the last month to get citizen input at an early stage. The turn-out hasn't been overwhelming -- ranging from 2 to 30 -- per meeting, but the comments have been helpful and re-assuring. Common themes have been: -- Protect our old trees from commercial development -- Bradford pears stuck in parking lot median are not "real" landscaping -- We want trails not just for recreation but also for transportation via foot and bicycle -- We want a walking path that crosses the interstate that bisects our city (and the path should be aesthetically pleasing and protected from heavy traffic) -- We want protection of our wildlife and water supply The difficult part, of course, is figuring out the best way to make these dreams a reality. Do you use carrots or sticks to get a developer to do "right" landscaping? But it gives our greenbelt task force new motivation to continue working on these issues, which obviously are not attractive only to pos-futures types. Diane Fitzsimmons Norman, Okla.
