Re[2]: [pf] Christianity by Kelley Smith 21 November 2000 16:55 UTC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Diane and Nan, Tuesday, November 21, 2000, 9:07:09 AM, you wrote: For me the struggle with reconciling wealth with Christianity is similar in some ways. But what troubles me most is the blind acceptance of ways of doing business. CEO's are paid such extravagant salaries while worker-bees are paid so much less, constantly fearful of losing their jobs. Money could be spnet for pollution control. Workers in third-world countries are exploited.... All of this is done in the name of maximizing profits for shareowners. And many of those shareowners are sweet old retired people who are nominal (at least) Christians! Or younger people attempting to save for retirement since they expect social security to be privatized. And they're taught that all this is consistent with some idea of "work ethic." And there seems to be not much of a way to opt out of the system; there are ways to minimize one's involvement with the system. I agree that wealth is a distraction from a contemplative spiritual life, but the evils of wealth seem (to me) to be compounded by an advanced industrial economy. Kelley OKC
